The MA Fine Art and Education presents a unique collaboration between BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art and Northumbria University who have worked in partnership to plan and deliver a distinctive postgraduate experience. This inspiring and challenging programme supports working teachers and educationalists to establish or enhance their combined practices as artist and facilitator at masters’ level. This involves not only making but talking about art through a dynamic, student-led process framed within the context of contemporary art and pedagogic enquiry. The crucial relationship between a personal creative practice and the methods of teaching art are extended using the learning potential of artist-led projects and gallery learning as well as the more individualistic traditions of a studio practice. The integration between facilitation and practice is central to the philosophy of the course.

The students demonstrate diverse and incredible capabilities as productive artists and pedagogical practitioners. Their exhibition captures outcomes of imaginative personal journeys and a rich dialogue between an innovative community of practice. Tilt_Shift celebrates the development of the students’ creativity across the academic year; through reflective, active and experiential learning the group have taken risks, pushed boundaries, tested ideas and shared their experimentation. At times this has required audacity, vulnerability and bravery, extending confidence and their self-belief as Artist Teachers / Educators. Tilting approaches, they explore a wide range of possibilities. Shifting focus, this has resulted in collaboration, participation and ultimately exciting transformation.
