PAINTING THE PIXEL includes the work of nine international artists who are navigating the inherent paradoxes between the computer's immaterial, encoded matrix and the handmade. The exhibition investigates how digital technology is used as a conceptual tool in painting, how the virtual 'non-space' is reconfigured through the material presence of paint, and how the cultural currency of the image has shifted in relation to the phenomenon of the Internet. Curated by Rachel Sharp as part of her practice-led PhD research at Northumbria University.
On Tues. 4 March, Gallery North will host a tour of the exhibition and artists' panel from 4-6 pm followed by a wine reception from 6-8 pm.

Colour in a Digital Light

Red is a colour with primal associations - how is this affected by the mediation of the computer screen? This workshop will explore the colour in a digital light. It will be led by Practice-led PhD researcher, Rachel Sharp, who recently curated Painting the Pixel at Gallery North. Rachel's work is based on digital images. She uses a palette knife to maximize the material qualities of the paint medium and to provide an antidote to the elusiveness of her digital source material.
This two hour workshop will begin with a brief visit to the Painting the Pixel exhibition. This will provide a chance to see first-hand how nine artists are engaging with digital colour. This will be followed by a painting session in the Colour Studio, in which students will work from images sourced online. Using a palette knife as a primary tool, students will learn approaches to colour mixing, limited palettes, and techniques for painting directly on to digital source images.
Palette knife or painting knife. A diamond shaped, 2 to 3 inch blade is ideal.
Prepared surface (gessoed board, canvas or paper for painting) measuring 8 x 10 inches
Two colour copies of an image from the Internet in which red is the predominant colour. Please crop and print the image to 8 x 10 inches. The image should be the same size as the prepared surface.
