Alfons Bytautus, Printmaker and Principle Technician in the Department of Arts will deliver a presentation and gallery talk on the works of John Bellany.
As Bellany was primarily a painter, he generally made prints in sporadic and inspired bursts during his career, in collaboration with many different skilled printers and in print workshops throughout the UK.
Bellany, a descendant of generations of fishing folk, based much of his emotionally charged work on the experience of growing up in the harbour town of Port Seton, outside Edinburgh. He fashioned a highly personal mythology, a blend of fact and fiction, tenanted with fisher-folk, animals (both real and imaginary) and thinly disguised self-portraits. The work is richly allegorical and yet he convinces us to accept his dream-like world as real, so that we can enter into the extraordinary world he created.
Bellany's success as a printmaker can be attributed to the visionary quality of the work coupled with his remarkable skills as a draughtsman. Never a follower of fashion, he placed himself squarely in the tradition of great painter-printmakers such as Durer, Rembrandt and Goya. Though he personally venerated Picasso, Bellany's work has much more in common with Northern European artist printmakers, such as Dix and Beckmann - all sharing a similar fascination with depicting for us both the joys and horrors of human existence.
